(April 24, 2025) Dr. Sutas Suttiprapa, Head of the Department of Tropical Medicine, recently delivered a powerful and inspiring luncheon talk to professors and graduate students.
His presentation, titled “TropMedKKU: To Make a Real-World Impact,” captivated the audience with a vision of how innovative and integrative strategies can reshape the fight against tropical diseases. Spotlighting the remarkable success of the LAWA Model, Dr. Suttiprapa illustrated how targeted interventions, grounded in deep scientific research, can lead to transformational health outcomes.
The Department of Tropical Medicine stands at the forefront of this mission, driving advances in diagnostics, therapeutics, and prevention—particularly against liver fluke-associated bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma). These achievements are built on a solid foundation of more than three decades of intensive basic research. Among the department’s key contributions are the identification of diagnostic markers, development of promising vaccine candidates, and the creation of the widely recognized LAWA Model.
Yet, as Dr. Suttiprapa emphasized, the journey does not end here. Continued research, innovation, and collaboration are essential to push the boundaries further—turning scientific breakthroughs into tangible outcomes that transform communities.
Dr. Suttiprapa’s insights lit a fire among the audience, demonstrating how the synergy of science, strategic thinking, and collective action can drive lasting, real-world impact in global health.

การบรรยายในหัวข้อ “TropMedKKU: To Make a Real-World Impact” ได้จุดประกายให้ผู้ฟังเห็นถึงแนวทางใหม่ ๆ ในการควบคุมโรคเขตร้อน ผ่านกลยุทธ์นวัตกรรมที่บูรณาการอย่างแท้จริง โดยเน้นย้ำความสำเร็จอันโดดเด่นของ ละว้าโมเดล เป็นตัวอย่างสำคัญที่พิสูจน์ว่า การผสานวิทยาศาสตร์เข้ากับกลยุทธ์สามารถสร้างการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่จับต้องได้พื้นที่ระบาดของโรคเขตร้อน
สาขาวิชาเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อน คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น เป็นผู้นำในการวิจัยเพื่อพัฒนาการวินิจฉัย การรักษา และการป้องกันโรคเขตร้อน โดยเฉพาะโรคมะเร็งท่อน้ำดีที่มีสาเหตุมาจากพยาธิใบไม้ตับ ความก้าวหน้าเหล่านี้มีรากฐานจากการวิจัยขั้นพื้นฐานที่ลึกซึ้งต่อเนื่องยาวนานกว่าสามทศวรรษ
ผลงานเด่นของสาขาวิชาฯ ได้แก่ การค้นพบตัวบ่งชี้ทางชีวภาพ (biomarkers) สำหรับการวินิจฉัย การพัฒนาวัคซีนต้นแบบ และการพัฒนาละว้าโมเดล ซึ่งเป็นต้นแบบการควบคุมโรคที่ได้รับการยอมรับในระดับสากล
อย่างไรก็ตาม รศ.ดร.สุทัศน์ ยังเน้นย้ำว่า “เส้นทางแห่งความสำเร็จยังไม่สิ้นสุด” จำเป็นต้องมีการวิจัยและนวัตกรรมอย่างต่อเนื่อง เพื่อขับเคลื่อนผลลัพธ์จากห้องปฏิบัติการสู่การเปลี่ยนแปลงเชิงประจักษ์ในชุมชน
การบรรยายครั้งนี้ได้ปลุกพลังและจุดประกายความหวังให้กับผู้ฟัง แสดงให้เห็นว่า การผนึกกำลังระหว่างวิทยาศาสตร์ ความคิดเชิงกลยุทธ์ และความร่วมมืออย่างใกล้ชิด สามารถสร้างผลกระทบที่ยั่งยืนได้อย่างแท้จริง
